As most have read the Mi-Ki was developed by a woman in Wisconsin in the early 1990's.from a combination of the Japanese Chin, Maltese and Papillion. There are two coats types that are accepted in several of the different registries.
The long coat has a beard and mustache and the smooth has a cleaner face and less hair on the feet to the ankles. The body hair is basically the same. They have hair not fur and it is an easy coat to take care of with basic combing and brushing, at least once a week. Ears cleaned and nails trimmed. Some people prefer to keep their dogs in what is called a puppy coat. There is really no professional grooming needed unless you should you decide to show then the head must be clean shaved and feet trimmed like a cat.
When the puppies are started at an early stage in their lives they basically enjoy the special attention it affords them.
I have not found many of the puppies and adults that are picky eaters as long as a very good quality food is given to them. I personally feel that giving 90% kibble and a teaspoon or tablespoon of canned dog food is what they need, NOT people food. I start with three meals a day, morning is kibble & canned, noon a snack of just kibble and dinner which is again kibble and a little canned and I always use a dollop of yogurt or ricotta cheese on top and a splash of olive oil for their skin.
Of course in the state of Florida and any state that has mosquito problems they MUST be on heart worm medicine.
Finally and MOST important you must find the best Veterinarian in your area, one that you can work with and trust, as you will use him/her throughout the life of the puppy.
